Next up on my eye makeup series is makeup for prominent eyelids. This will also feature tips for deep set eyes. Those two types of eyes often go together, so I will address both in this blog.
I am often envious of these eyes, as I have hooded eyes and I have to contour the crap out of my eyes to give them dimension! Every eye shape has its own beauty and benefits, and every shape has its difficulties!
What are prominent eyelids? Prominent lids are when your moving eyelid (the top eyelid that sits on your eyeball) is the largest lid. Prominent eyelids are basically the opposite of hooded eyes, where the upper eyelid right under the eyebrow is the largest lid.
What are deep set eyes? Deep set eyes have a deep prominent crease, and if makeup is applied incorrectly, the eyes can appear to be quite hollow. If applied well, deep set eyes are the envy of all!
Makeup Tips for Prominent Lids and Deep Set Eyes:
- A dark colour along the entire crease will make the eyes look hollow and even more deep set, so that should be avoided. Your natural crease is prominent and deep, so it is an unnecessary step to add a deep shade to it, especially the inner crease.
- A light colour on the eyelids has the potential to make the eyes look bulging, so keep the lid colour medium to deep.
- A thick smudged line of eyeliner is super flattering on this eye shape.

How To Apply Eye Makeup for Prominent Lids/Deep Set Eyes:
- Begin with a medium shade of eye shadow and apply that onto the whole eyelid and into the crease. (For light skin, a medium shade is something like: Macchiato, Clouded, Magic Mauve, Latte, Mountain Haze. For deeper skin tones, a medium shade would be: Plum, Carob, Close to Cocoa, Wisteria, Harvest Moon, Smoke).
- Then smudge a deep shade along the lashline and to the outer half of the eyes, and blend slightly into the crease. (For light skin, shades in Pressed Powders such as Dapper, Haunt, Smoke, Espresso, Pewter. Shades in Luminous Loose Mineral Shadows such as Midnight, Java, Close to Cocoa, Black Tie, Deep Plum. And shades in the Matte Loose Mineral Shadows such as Carob, Coffee, Graphite, Plum. For deep skin, shades in Pressed Powders such as Dapper, Onyx, Espresso, Pewter. Shades in Luminous Loose Mineral Shadows such as Java, Deep Plum, Black Tie, Urban. And shades in Matte Loose Mineral Shadows such as Black Velvet, Coffee, and Graphite.
- Feel free to smudge eye shadow under the eyes as an eyeliner. It looks better to use a smudged shadow than a harsh line of eyeliner under the eyes.
- You have the freedom to apply a thick line of eyeliner to the upper lashline, as there is a lot of space to work with on your eyelid. I suggest smudging the line with eye shadow or just with a brush (such as the Contour Crease Brush), as this will look more flattering. You don't have to apply a thick line, but know that you can if you want.
