Kristen von Riesen - Pure Anada Makeup Artist
Years ago I did a makeup look for a collaborative photo shoot with a local hair salon. It was an editorial style shoot, and the makeup was so intense and smoky. My cup of tea, for sure!
Now, many years later, we have had clients ask for a tutorial for this look. Getting a super smudged smoky eye isn't complicated, but it is surprisingly detailed.
As I outline in this video (linked below), smoky eyes may look like they are haphazardly applied, but that couldn't be farther from the truth. In fact, each colour is carefully applied, and the blending is what takes it to a smoky eye. Over-blending is a typical problem. The key to carefully blending smoky eyes, is to blend ONLY between each colour - do not blend all the colours together.
Always, always, always add mascara to your smoky eye look. That takes it from a black eye to a smoky eye.
And keep the lip colour you pair with smoky eyes to a neutral, or subtle colour. Going intensely dark or bright may be a little much for this look.
The Look:
Foundation:
Tinted Moisturizer in Very Fair, Liquid Concealer in Very Fair, Loose Mineral Foundation in Atlantic Bisque.
Cheeks:
Loose Mineral Blush in Azalea. Contour Powder in Beguiling. Highlight Powder in Lustrous.
Brows:
Brow Powder in Cliff.
Lips:
Innocence Lipstick, Rose Gold Lip Gloss.
Eyes:
Illusion Eye Shadow under brows, and in inner corners of eyes.
Smoke Eye Shadow on eyelid, and blended generously under eyes.
Dove Eye Shadow in crease.
Black Pureline Eyeliner on upper lashline, and in waterlines.
Blend eyeliner with Onyx Eye Shadow, and use Onyx under the eyes as eyeliner.
Pile on Black Mascara.
